Kind vs. wicked learning environments

Early specialization pays off in 'kind' environments — like chess or golf — where rules are fixed and feedback is immediate and accurate. Most of life is a 'wicked' environment, where patterns don't repeat cleanly and feedback is delayed or misleading, and there breadth and adaptability matter far more than narrow, drilled expertise.

The sampling period

Many elite performers go through a sampling period first — trying many sports, subjects or fields before committing. This apparent detour builds a wide base of skills and self-knowledge (‘match quality’) that lets them eventually choose and excel at the right thing, often overtaking peers who specialized from the start.
