Retrieval practice (self-testing)

Trying to recall something from memory — testing yourself — is one of the most powerful ways to learn, far stronger than re-studying the same material. Each act of retrieval strengthens the memory and reveals what you don't yet know, which is why a quiz is not just measurement but one of the best study tools available.

Spaced practice

Cramming produces fast gains that fade almost as fast. Spacing the same practice out over time — letting a little forgetting set in before you retrieve again — makes learning slower to acquire but dramatically more durable, because the effort of reconstructing a fading memory is what consolidates it.

Interleaving

Practicing several related topics or problem types in a mixed order, rather than blocking them one at a time, feels harder and lowers your practice-session performance — but it produces markedly better long-term retention and the ability to tell problems apart and apply the right approach later.

Desirable difficulties

Learning that feels effortful and slow generally sticks better than learning that feels easy and fluent. The authors call these productive obstacles 'desirable difficulties': when the brain has to work to encode or retrieve, it builds stronger, more flexible memory than smooth, frictionless review ever does.

The illusion of knowing

Fluency with material in front of you — the ease of rereading a highlighted passage — is routinely mistaken for mastery. This metacognitive error leads people to stop studying too soon and to favor ineffective methods; genuine self-testing punctures the illusion by showing what you can actually produce without the text.

01Why do the authors argue that testing yourself is a learning tool, not just a way to measure learning?
