Deep Work (definition)
Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.
Shallow work
Non-cognitively demanding, logistical tasks, often performed while distracted (email, status meetings, quick admin). Newport argues shallow work is necessary in small amounts but doesn't create much value and is easy for others to replicate.

As automation and AI absorb routine cognitive tasks, the ability to quickly master hard things and produce at an elite level becomes increasingly rare — and increasingly valuable to those who cultivate it.
